ALTHOUGH Dr. Henry Marshall wrote extensively in the post-Waterloo era about the health of soldiers, relatively little has been written about his influence on military medicine." Marshall was a respected naturalist, a gifted historian, the first medical officer in the British army to compile vital statistics of troops garrisoned throughout the Empire,' and he was the foremost early Victorian advocate of army reforms to benefit enlisted men. Marshall was born a farmer's son in the parish of Kilsyth, Scotland, where his uncle, the Reverend Robert Rennie, wrote a statistical account of the local population. The young Scot received his professional education at the University of Glasgow where he formed a close friendship with a Professor of Anatomy, Dr. James Jeffray. In 1803 Marshall began his service career as a surgeon's mate in the Royal Navy, but in 1805 he joined the Forfarshire Militia as an assistant surgeon. He soon exchanged to the 89th Regiment which participated in expeditions (1806-1808) to Cape Town and to Buenos Aires. Marshall then accompanied the 89th to Colombo in 1808 where be became, successively, a regimental surgeon, a staff surgeon, and in 1816, a senior medical officer.
